Mattos-Massei - Be That Person because you can!

Moses is leading the people into the land of Israel and has to make some difficult decisions, and he does this by practicing his faith and sincere beliefs, and being a person of his word, of good and correct behaviors. He makes a promise and keeps his promise!!!!........ In Mattos-Massei, we learn/reminded of a valuable lesson, that of keeping one’s word and how we should be that person; a person of good moral character. This is to be an honorable, respectful, and reverent human being.  The ancient scholars believed we should NOT take a hard line and extremely difficult vows and not to make promises about things that are out of our control, as NOT everything can be in OUR very own control.  Moses is keeping his word and acting like a MENSCH (An upstanding, worthy, honorable adult person) –  Usage - “Be a mensch! Admit your mistake and make things good.”

How does one attain the label and become a mensch?  We all should most definitely try to be a MENSCH!  There are definite times that we aren’t so ‘menschy’ though, as humans definitely do error, but through true belief and practice,  a mind open to learning, to changing, we learn from our mishaps. Life Lessons!

In this parsha/portion, we learn about the journey from Egypt to Israel, and all 42 stops along the way.  We, as people do not walk in a straight line thankfully, although it is the shortest distance that joins them. As humans, we take a step progressively forward, and at times, a few backwards.  We should never be overly discouraged, and we should continue our path of a spiritual and emotional walk, just as our forefathers/mothers fled from Egypt and took a few steps back here and there; they did indeed finally prevail!  We see, even when Israel is within reach, it is not a state of perfection.  That’s okay, as there is a plan; keep doing what you do, even when you scrape your knees and fall, and strive to always be open to learning, and walk like that of a mensch and with sincere focus!  We ALL fall short and must realize that as long as we keep trying with honest intent; our walk to honor-ability is very present, and is a true ability that can be attained.   Take baby steps when needed, and even crawl at times, as long as you’re moving progressively forward! Progress!

A dear friend shared a story with me that makes this come to life.  A ranch owner in Wyoming, would wear the biggest and brightest Stetson Cowboy hat bedazzled only when drive-by tourist season occurred, instead of his very own and worn in comfy cowboy hat offering him comfort.   A tourist was visiting the ranch, and asked, “Hey Cowboy ,why a big bedazzled Cowboy hat that is obviously somewhat flashy, and not a worn and worked in Cowboy hat and dress jeans?”  His reply, “Because I don’t want people to think I am JUST any ranch hand – I am the owner!” Makes one think!  Ego does get in the way at times.  It is NOT the way you dress, it is not about the money you make, and bills and credit cards showing in your wallet, it is not always about what you say, but it is what you strive for and become that defines you! It is how we walk, and show our true sincerity and love!  It is how we treat others- ALL! It is how we learn to become a better person!  We are forever evolving and growing.   Be kind and change the world!

In our World today, we must strive to be that much nicer , that much more 'tolerant' (and yes difficult at times), coupled with a sincere comprehension and understanding of different opinions and one's upbringing.  I may not agree with you, but I absolutley am able to be in control of myself and be nice and civil...Be THAT Mensch! Make THIS YOU!

Terumah - What's The Gift ?

Terumah - What's The Gift ? February 16 and 17, 2018 The word, "Terumah" means "gift', "contribution", "offering" .  This Torah portion continues to detail and share the story of the building of "The Tabernacle, or Temple", and it's ornamentation from the men and women! Women?  Yes, it explicitly states that the instructions that were utilized were intended for BOTH men and women!  This really stands out in indelible ink of sorts, as it is very clear that women were invited and actively open to participate in an inclusive manner, in what might be considered a very male dominated cult-like society!   The interpretation, "Let THEM make a sanctuary", "men AND women, all whose hearts moved them."  This really stands out beautifully, as THE women got to be participants and viewed with some equality, as well as some equity in society! Is the actual "building" of the Temple the gift ...

Do We Really Expect Results From Repenting?

Do We Really Expect Results From Repentance? As Yom Kippur approaches us, we are asked & expected ,year in and year out, on this ONE day to repent for our wrongdoings, impure thoughts, harmful acts, and ill behaviors for the past year!  Judaism is NOT the only religion/faith to follow this thought , as other ones also have their asking of forgiveness and repentance.  According to Merriam Webster; the action or process of  repenting  especially for misdeeds or moral shortcomings... t o feel or show that you are sorry for something bad or wrong that you did and that you want to do what is right The leader told us that we would be forgiven for our sins if we  repented . criminals who have  repented  for their crimes —  sometimes +  of We must  repent of  our sins/wrongdoings. — repentance   /rɪ ˈ pɛntn̩s/     noun   [ noncount ] His behavior is...

Mishpatim - Build UP With Tikkun Olam

In this week’s Torah Portion,  Mishpatim  , we continue to see the introduction of Laws, and the building of a strong foundation based upon  Ethics , a person’s  Civil  manner, and  Moralistic  values. The ethical, moral, and civil aspect are a great teaching in Judaism, in fact, a great foundation in all life, and it has given each person an important uniqueness and a possible proactive impact on him/herself, and to the group. To have a relationship, a healthy one at least, you must strive for that of being ethical, and very civil, and have moral DNA..  This is speaking of human dignity, preserving our own feelings and that of others, and understanding them, having self -worth, and continuing our own focus, as well as consideration for others that allows growth and accepts a proactive change. We must not be  critical , so very, very critical of everything and so sensitive! It seems like we live in a society now that we ar...
